SB-CEU changes to state certification

Recent changes to recording SB-CEU’s.
New Administrative Rules that govern the educator’s certificates were recently adopted by the legislature. These new administrative rules have eliminated the term “State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs). The State credits educators can earn are now referred as “state continuing education hours” and “clock hours” in the Administrative Rules. The Office of Professional Preparation will be combining these two terms into one – “State Continuing Education Clock Hours” to help clarify it to the field. So, instead of earning 18 SB-CEUs, an educator will have to earn 180 state continuing education clock hours.
Under the new Administrative Rules, the credits educators must earn for renewal of their certificate has also expanded to include the 5 days of professional development a district is required to provide their teachers annually (PA 289, 1995 Sec.380.1527). The options they now have to earn credits for renewal are: 6 college semester credits, 180 state continuing education clock hours, district provided professional development (Sec.380.1527), or a combination of these. More specific directions will be going out soon on how teachers will report their district provided PD for credit.
What does that mean for us? The main change our system will see is that we will no longer have to convert our “contact hours” into “SB-CEUs”. The new system will work off the hours an individual earns and they will be called “clock hours” instead of “contact hours”.
As of June 11th, educators will have to enter the SB-CEU credits as “hours” into the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS). They will need to transpose the SB-CEUs listed on their old certificate, back into hours.
