Dearborn Public Schools is committed to protecting Michigan’s water resources through compliance with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program. As a public school district that owns and maintains stormwater infrastructure, the district implements practices that help reduce pollutants entering local waterways through stormwater runoff.
Stormwater runoff occurs when rain or melting snow flows over roofs, parking lots, sidewalks, athletic fields, and other hard surfaces instead of soaking into the ground. As runoff travels across these surfaces, it can carry pollutants such as sediment, litter, fertilizers, oil, and other contaminants into storm drains that discharge to nearby streams, rivers, and lakes.
Everyone plays a role in protecting our waterways. Students, staff, families, and community members can help by properly disposing of waste, preventing litter from entering storm drains, minimizing the use of fertilizers and pesticides, cleaning up pet waste, and reporting illicit discharges or dumping into storm drains.
