{"id":377,"date":"2017-11-13T21:09:55","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T02:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/assessment.dearbornschools.org\/?page_id=377"},"modified":"2025-12-02T07:52:41","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T12:52:41","slug":"test-outs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dearbornschools.org\/assessmentblog\/test-outs\/","title":{"rendered":"Test-Outs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2026 Dearborn Public Schools Test Out Policy<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Michigan Merit Curriculum Law allows students to attempt to earn credit for a course without taking it through the \u201c<\/span><b><i>Test Out<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d process.\u00a0 If a student can pass an exam equivalent in rigor to a final exam for the course, they can earn credit for that course.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specifically, Michigan Merit Curriculum Law, Section 380.1278(a)(4)(c), states\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201ca school district or public school academy shall also grant a student credit if the student earns a qualifying score, as determined by the department, on the assessments developed or selected for the subject area by the department or the student earns a qualifying score, as determined by the school district or public school academy, on 1 or more assessments developed or selected by the school district or public school academy that measure a student\u2019s understanding of the subject area content expectations or guidelines that apply to the credit.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More information about this law and the state\u2019s policies can be found at the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mde\/services\/flexible-learning\/testing-out\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Michigan Department of Education\u2019s Testing Out page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dearborn has developed a Test Out policy that complies with the Michigan Merit Curriculum Law. The following explains how to sign up for Test Outs, what to expect, and how credit is earned.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Signing up for Test Outs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Test Outs occur at certain times throughout the school year. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1XR7GRGp7lRup3kKhT5XNzz8FV2Wl7v-jU3LHXWD0_XE\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Dearborn Schools Test Out calendar can be found here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0 Students sign up through their school counselor, not independently.\u00a0 This allows the counselor the opportunity to discuss the student\u2019s reasons and goals for Testing Out, as well as review their schedule.\u00a0 Information about signing up will be distributed two weeks before each Test Out session.\u00a0 Please refer to the calendar above.\u00a0 If a student has not received the information, please contact the school counselor for assistance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Format for Test Out exams<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most Test Out exams are multiple-choice exams, written to be similar to the final exam taken in the course.\u00a0 Depending on the course, students may also be required to write an essay, participate in an interview, or provide an oral response.\u00a0 The district does not provide study guides for Test Outs.\u00a0 Students should review the essential standards for each course.\u00a0 A test for a semester course is 90 minutes.\u00a0 A full-year course will require two 90-minute exams to earn credit.\u00a0 A typical Test Out session will last up to 3 \u00bd hours if a student is attempting to earn credit for both semesters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following table shows the format for a Test Out session.\u00a0 If the session starts at 3:30, students should arrive no later than 3:15 and expect to leave between 6:30 and 7:00. If students finish their exams early, they may leave.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check In<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span 400\">Tests are administered at the student&#8217;s school or at the Administrative Services Center (ASC), located at 1800 Audette Street, Dearborn, MI 48824.\u00a0 Please see the above calendar for times and locations<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earning Credit for Test Outs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A grade of C+ or better is required to earn credit.\u00a0 Dearborn defines a C+ as a 78% or better on the Test Out exam.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When students earn credit through Test Outs, a pass grade (G) is recorded on their transcript.\u00a0 Please note that grades of G do not contribute to the GPA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additional Notes about Test Outs\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is no fee for taking a Test Out<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Foreign Language Test Outs are cumulative.\u00a0 A student may earn more than one year of credit for a higher-level exam.\u00a0 For example, if a student passes an Arabic Level 3 exam, they can also earn credit for Arabic 1 and 2.\u00a0 Core classes (Math, Language Arts, etc.) need to be taken individually<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If a student does not pass a Test Out, they are ineligible to take that same Test Out for the remainder of the school year. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Test Outs are not intended to be a second chance for students who fail a course during the semester.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Conduct During Test Outs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students need to comply with the following guidelines during the Test Out session.\u00a0 Failure to do so can prompt their removal from the Test Out process and invalidate their score.\u00a0 \u00a0 Students will be asked to review and agree to these terms before their Test Out session.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be on time<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students should arrive at the Test Out session 15 minutes early to register<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Test Outs begin promptly at the scheduled time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any student more than 15 minutes late will not be admitted.\u00a0 Students not admitted into the Test Out session for tardiness will need to sign up for the next available Test Out session.\u00a0 Make-up sessions will not be available.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No Talking or Disruption<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remain silent once the test begins<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have a question or need help, raise your hand<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do not make noises, gestures, or attempt to communicate with others.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stay Seated<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stay in your assigned seat unless permitted to move<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only one person may leave the room at a time (if permitted)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No Electronic Devices<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Phones, smart watches, earbuds, or any electronic devices must be:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Powered off or on Do Not Disturb<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Placed face down away from you (in a bag, box, or designated area)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accessing devices during the test may result in test disqualification<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use Only Approved Materials<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only approved calculators, pens, pencils, and scratch paper may be used<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No outside notes, books, or unauthorized aids<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Time Awareness<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be aware of time limits.
