Dearborn Public Schools provides students with special needs additional assistance as mandated under the IDEA '04 Federal Law. Special education services are provided from birth to age twenty-five. Any student attending a public or private school is eligible to be evaluated by the school district. Services are provided from birth through school age for any child in the district with a disability. Call the special education office if you have questions or need more information.
If you suspect your child has a disability affecting his or her school performance, please notify your child’s teacher, counselor, principal, or Michael Shelton, Director Special Education at 827-7051.
Each intermediate school district in Michigan is required to appoint a Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) composed of representatives from each of its constituent districts.
The representatives “shall consist only of parents of students with disabilities with at least one parent from each constituent local school district and public school academy...” (Rule 340.1838 Michigan Department of Education Revised Administrative Rules for Special Education, November 2002).
In Wayne County, this is the WCPAC. WCPAC members often serve as an information source and advocates for other parents in their community.
Each monthly business meeting of the WCPAC usually includes a parent training segment on issues identified by the WCPAC members. Go to the Dearborn SEPAC Website
