Someone told me the district runs a free pre-school program at Cotter is this true?
The program run at Cotter is not free daycare. The Michigan School Readiness Preschool Program (MSRP) serves the districts neediest children and provides them with the educational resource they need to start Kindergarten on par with their peers. This program is funded by a grant from the Michigan Department of Education and other sources. Children selected for the program will be four years old by December 1st. Most of the students attend school at Cotter but there are also children being served at Whitmore-Bolles and Salina. Approximately 525 children are served each year, this is about half of the in-coming kindergarteners. The children who attend the program have been identified as having several factors that put them at risk of not succeeding in kindergarten. Each year over 1,000 families are interviewed and screened for selection into the program. All of the teachers (17) must hold a State of Michigan Teaching certificate for elementary grades and hold the additional ZA Endorsement indicating that they have a specialization in Early Childhood, of the 17 MSRP teachers 16 hold Master Degree in Early Childhood and 1 teacher is Nationally Board Certified. Paraprofessionals must hold a Child Development Associate (CDA) and must be renewed every 2 years.
