Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER), which provides key information on the 2010-2011 educational progress for DuVall Elementary School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact me for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site http://dearbornschools.org/downloads/cat_view/120-annual-education-reports You can also obtain a paper copy from the DuVall school office.

For the 2010-2011 school year, Du Vall Elementary made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics. While we are pleased to have reached this important goal, we are continuously working to improve. We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.

State law requires that we also report additional information.

•Students are assigned to neighborhood schools based on Board of Education-adopted boundaries. The Dearborn Public Schools has been awarded unconditional district-level accreditation through the North Central/Advanc-Ed Accreditation Association. This accreditation rating is in effect through 2013.

•DuVall Elementary continues to shine as an outstanding school program. Listed on the next page are some of the areas in which the DuVall School Improvement Committee believes that DuVall shines within the educational community.

•We had over 90% representation at our parent-teacher conferences and we also have over 200 parents signed up for the principal blog and teacher blogs, which allows for constant communication between the school and parents. Parents who do not have access to the Internet receive paper copies of information.

Community Involvement

DuVall is a neighborhood school in the truest sense. Most of the students walk or ride bikes to school. There are many parent and grandparent volunteers who come to work with the teachers and students. The building is used by many organizations after school hours. Some fundraisers are held in cooperation with local businesses.

Positive Penguin Points

DuVall has started a Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) program that teaches students to be responsible, respectful, and safe citizens. When these behviors are recognized, students are awarded with a, Positive Penguin Point. This slip of paper, which describes the exemplary student's behavior, is turned into the office for a monthly raffle.

Achievement

Most of the DuVall students achieve proficiency on the MEAP. They also do very well on the new district common assessments. The Literacy writing assessments show growth from initial testing in the fall of each year and the final assessment in the spring. The same is true of the DRA assessments. Teachers, staff and the community are all very proud of our DuVall students.

Technology Integration and Support for the Core Curriculum and the Arts

The DuVall Elementary technology model has brought a great deal of enthusiasm and enhanced learning opportunities to our school. The primary goal of the technology model is to focus on improving the quality of curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on the promotion of the core subjects -reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies- and the arts. Higher order thinking skills and interactive learning are important components of our model. Students create multimedia projects that focus on the benchmarks and objectives in the Michigan Curriculum Frameworks and Dearborn Curriculum. Technology Integration is part of the DuVall School Improvement Plan with an objective to provide students with the necessary skills to become successful in the 21st century global economy.

The DuVall school community has accomplished so much this year including: the achievement of excellent MEAP scores, an outstanding School Improvement Plan (SIP) Evaluation, the implementation and integration of technology across the curriculum and (DTAC), the celebration of music and the arts through wonderful programs like art club and the Alice in Wonderland production, started a Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) program, and has had continual promotion of parent involvement through our volunteer program along with a strong commitment on the part of the PTA, to name just a few.

Finally, I would like to share my excitement in having the opportunity to serve as the principal for DuVall Elementary School. As a former Dearborn Public Schools student and lifelong member of the community, it is a privilege to give back to the community in my role as an educator. For the years to come, I look forward to working with all of you as we continue to provide the highest standard of excellence in education for our DuVall students.

I hope that everyone had a fantastic summer and I look forward to another outstanding school year in 2011-12.

Sincerely,

Dan Hartley

Principal
