- Board selects new officers for 2013 at first meeting of new year.
January is School Board Recognition Month and the Dearborn Public Schools is joining school districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for their enduring dedication to public education.
“The Dearborn Board of Education trustees are an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to providing a quality education to all children in our classrooms and truly believe that all students can succeed,” commented Mr. Brian Whiston, Superintendent of the Dearborn Public Schools.
School Board members in Dearborn develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our education system. They bear responsibility for an annual budget of $172 million, 19,155 students, more than 2,400 employees and 34 buildings in the Dearborn Public Schools. In addition they oversee Henry Ford Community College.
The Board of Education, and the hundreds like it across the state, preserves the core of our democracy, public education. They ensure that decisions on school programming are made by people elected to represent the community’s values, culture and circumstances. They are citizens whose decisions affect our students and build our community.
On behalf of the staff, students, and parents I want to thank our Board members for their service to our community and the hours of time they have dedicated to making the Dearborn Public Schools a great place for children to learn,” Whiston added.
The Board began the year with a brief organizational meeting to select new officers and took part in a swearing in ceremony. Seventeen year veteran Board member Ms. Pamela Adams was selected to be President. Mr. Hussein Berry was named Vice-President, Mr. Joe Guido, Secretary, and Mr. James Schoolmaster will take on the role as Treasurer. Board members serve in their officer position for one year but now will serve on the Board for a term of six years.
Newly elected 19th District Court Judge Sam Salamey gave the oath of office to returning Board members Mary Lane and Aimee Schoelles (formerly Aimee Blackburn). Both were successful in retaining their Board seats in the November 2012 election.
Dearborn Board of Education members bring a variety of professional expertise and practical experience to the job. School Board members serving the students in the Dearborn Public Schools are:
