Students Now Need To Be 5 Years Old By November 1 To Start Kindergarten  

-Dearborn Public Schools announce Kindergarten Round-Up schedule and information on November 1 deadline waiver.  

Under a new State law the kindergarten entry date will gradually change over the next three years from December 1 to September 1.  The new law takes effect this year meaning that for 2013 children must be 5 years of age by November 1 in order to be eligible to enroll in kindergarten.   

However, parents with a child whose birthday falls after the new November 1 deadline have until June 1, 2013 to complete a simple WAIVER that will allow them to enroll their child in kindergarten even if their birthday falls after the November 1 date.

YOU WILL NEED A WAIVER FOR THE:
2013-14 School Year- If your child turns 5 years of age after NOVEMBER 1, 2013.

2014-15 School Year- If your child turns 5 years of age after OCTOBER 1, 2014.

2015-16 School Year- If your child turns 5 years of age after SEPTEMBER 1, 2015.

The waiver is available at all elementary schools in the district, the Student Services Office located in the Administration Building, 18700 Audette, Dearborn 48124, or on the district’s website: www.dearbornschools.org. Waivers only need to be completed in the year your child will be attending kindergarten. There is no waiver available for children turning 5 after December 1.  

The district also announces the 2013 Kindergarten Round-Up schedule.  The annual Kindergarten Round-Up provides parents with the opportunity to find out about their neighborhood school and enroll their child for the fall semester.

All parents who have a child who will be five years old by or on December 1, 2013 should plan on attending a Kindergarten Round-Up at their neighborhood elementary school. It is important for parents to call the school and let them know they will be attending so that the school can prepare information packages for the parents. However, please attend even if you are not able to call in advance. Weather or other unforeseen circumstances could affect the date or time, so contacting the school in advance is a good idea.
