Plan your summer trips now because on September 7, 2011 students will need to be ready for the first day of the 2011-12 school year. Although there are still a few weeks remaining in the current school year, many parents, students, and community members are making plans for next year. The 2011-12 calendar also brings back the week-long mid-winter break in February and contains 16 late start dates.

Several factors determine the district calendar including state mandates, a county-wide common calendar, community needs, professional development obligations, and days decided through negotiations between the Board of Education and the Dearborn Federation of Teachers (DFT).  The recent agreement between the DFT and the Board included calendars for both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.

Last year the district began using selected late start dates for professional development and school improvement. A recent survey, completed by almost 100% of instructional staff members, found that the late start dates have been extremely helpful in providing teachers and principals time to meet, collaborate with colleagues, work on school improvement goals, and improve student instruction.   When asked if the late start morning focused on issues that directly impact student learning, 94% responded favorably. 86% of the respondents agreed that the time provided useful collaboration time to share best practices. The first of the 16 late start dates will occur on September 21, 2011 and will continue on various Wednesdays throughout the year.

Both the 2011-12 and the 2012-13 calendars will be posted on the district’s website. Click on the “District Calendar” icon located on the front page of the website. You can download a PDF version of the calendar or you can view an on-line calendar.  Parents are reminded to check with their child’s school for important events and activities taking place unique to their school.
